like a change from the peace and solitude of our guest house, Charlottetown is only a little more than an hour's drive away, with numerous
cultural activities, cafes and bars.
You'll find there is a vibrant network of artists, writers, and musicians located in
Charlottetown and other communities across the Island. We've compiled a list of organizations and services that may be of interest to artists and writers while staying at Harbour Lights Guest House.
The Island's free arts & cultural events newspaper that is published on the last Thursday of the month prior to publication. The newspaper features Island-wide listings of musical, theatrical, and literary events, along with profiles of people and organizations involved in the arts community.
Open year-round, the Centre showcases provincial, national, and international art and cultural exhibits, along with live performances. The complex houses several theatres, the provincial library and archives, a gift shop gallery, and a bistro.
This gallery features original works by prominent contemporary PEI artists, as well as modern and historical works by well-known Maritimes and Canadian artists. Antique furniture and fine decor items complement the fine arts collection available for sale. Solo artist and group shows are featured
throughout the year in a changing gallery section. The gallery is located directly across the street from the Confederation Centre for the Arts.
The Guild assists and supports emerging and established members of the Island's cultural and arts community by offering affordable studio and office space to artists looking to produce and present their work. The Guild building houses both exhibit and performance spaces, and provides access to training and its support staff.
IMAC is a "member driven non-profit independent media arts organization"that offers workshops, grants, production assistance, equipment rental, mentoring and a variety of other support services to filmmakers on the Island. IMAC offers a yearly summer Screenwriters' Bootcamp.
The Institute hosts events, projects, and research that focus upon Lucy Maud Montgomery's life, works, and her impact upon literature and culture.
The PEICA is an advocacy organization that seeks to "foster the development of the arts through advocacy, education, programs and services." The Council makes available grant monies for artists and arts-related groups, and it also publishes a weekly online newsletter that provides the Island's arts communities with information on current events and opportunities.
The PEI Writers' Guild is a membership-based advocacy group that works to promote and support Atlantic Maritimes writers. They provide mentoring programs and workshops to encourage emerging writers, and they administer the Island Literary Awards andWriters in the Schools programs. Harbour Lights Guest House maintains a list of guild members who are available for fee-based support services, such as copy editing, draft review, or mentoring for writer-residents at our guest house.
A poets community website on PEI that features currently active poets working on the Island, podcasts of poets reading their works, information on the Poet Laureate program, poetry projects for school outreach, biographical information and selections on the Island's historical poets, a bibliography of Island poets, and much more.
TWiG (The Writers in Group):
TWiG is Charlottetown's oldest writing group, with members meeting weekly at the Kirk of St. James to share and critique their writing. The group has produced three writing anthologies over the years; the latest edition, TWiG Blooms, was produced in June 2009.
